My Daughter, the Not So Virginal

In the post My Daughter, the Virgin, I mentioned the prevalent custom of including the phrase "the praise-worthy virgin bride" on chareidi wedding invitations. So what is a poor girl to do if she strayed before marriage and doesn't want the chosson to know? It's Gigimo to the rescue with their Artificial Virginity Hymen! "When your lover penetrate, it will ooze out a liquid that look like blood not too much but just the right amount. Add in a few moans and groans, you will pass through undetectable." [sic] Made in Japan, the world leader in sex toys.

Conservatives in Egypt are apparently up in arms about this device, as it is "an assault on Islamic and Arab values."

No word yet from our gedolim.

Why can't she just say she's a Mukkas Eitz. Whatever that's supposed to mean.

Baruch hashem, our gedolim have chimed in. Don't remember the exact citation, but I am certain that Igrose Moshe addresses this and advises that the kesuva be left as is (with the word besulah) and it is kosher so long as the husband-to-be is informed. I think he even suggests not informing the mesader kiddushin.

I thought of such a device 30 years ago or so, but figured that it was so self-obvious that any interested woman would just put together an ad-hoc device.

The same cannot be said for a giyores who is automatically suspect and has the din of a zona (which is why she only gets sheva brochos at the wedding meal.)

You guys are so funny! Don't you know that only some women bleed at first intercourse????

Perhaps in the bible or in countries where girls get married as children, bleeding is de rigeur, but in adult women there's a huge variation.

Which is why I got rid of ours. I don't want a document in my home that implies my virgin bride was not a virgin. Why on earth would I permit that?

Can I put a sign in your home that says your wife must have had sex before she married you, even though she did not?

It's insulting and rude and a lie by implication.

I specifically asked to have the two hundred zuz amount, was rejected.

Good grief.
